e33 Makes Sailing Fun & Easy for Family New to the Sport
Rand Saunders and his wife Moya were both relatively new to the sport of sailing when they purchased an e33 in May 2009. He shares his thoughts on why they think the e33 is a perfect boat for new sailors here:
“Although Moya and I have spent a lot of time on powerboats, we were quite new to sailing when we decided to buy an e33. Basically, I took a sailing course on a Pearson Ensign, and have done some sailing on a Herreshoff 22 ft. I got a bit more serious about sailing last year, and this year joined the crew on an Olsen 911 (30 ft sloop) at the Duck Island Yacht Club. She’s a fast PHRF boat and I’ve learned a great deal on her, but I found her mass and many lines daunting. The e33 on the other hand, is a very simple boat to sail and manuever around the docks! First of all, the e33 doesn’t have 16 lines and 4 winches to deal with. You have a gross and fine tune of the main and jib sheets and that’s about it. She’s very nimble and easy to handle overall. My wife also took a class on the Pearson, and at first thought the e33 would be too much boat for us and our two kids who are 8 and 10 years old. But she’s completely at ease and comfortable on our e33 both out sailing and at the dock. Our kids love the aft deck. The other unexpected bonus? Moya has gotten seasick on most every boat she’s been on except this one. I don’t know if it’s the e33’s stability or maybe because of the clear sight line over the cabin, but whatever the reason, we love it. We’re planning on entering some PHRF races this summer on Long Island Sound and are excited to hone our sailing skills on her.” |

Jeremy Wurmfeld trimming the jib on Shamoun in St. Barth's going head to head with the Maltese Falcon |
 |
Robbie Doyle & Jeremy Wurmfeld Race in Superyacht Regattas
e Sailing Yachts founders Robbie Doyle and Jeremy Wurmfeld both competed in the St. Barths Bucket in May and The Horus Superyacht Cup in Palma in June. Jeremy crewed on the 108’ beauty Shamoun in St. Barth’s while Robbie Doyle helped lead the team on the 130’ P2 yacht. In Palma both returned to the circuit as crew for Shamoun.
Jeremy shares, “These are extraordinary machines – each day I spend crewing on them I think of something new, both from the perspective of a sailor and designer. Superyachts inform and inspire our smaller yacht design, and Robbie and I strive to bring that “superyacht” quality into everything we do. But when I get back from these races to the design boards I also find it satisfying to peel away all of the complexities that require a large crew and focus on what a single handing skipper or a few friends really need to have a pure sailing experience.”
Robbie said, “Like the America’s Cup and the Volvo Boats, I’m seeing the superyachts utilizing the large roach or square top mains. This configuration is popular on both the lighter, higher performance superyachts as well as on the new schooners that are using square top mains to fill the gap between the main and foremast. The e33’s sail plan is really ahead of the curve.” Read more about the e33’s new square top main in the March 09 e-newsletter. |

Rick Skinner and his family enjoying SKeDADDLE in Mobile Bay |

My "Top Five"
For many of us July is smack dab in the middle of a short sailing season and we're trying to get out on the water as much as we can. For Rick Skinner, July is just another month (albeit a hot one!) because he and his family get to enjoy their e33 SKeDADDLE year round. Here are Rick's “top five” moments aboard SKeDADDLE:
5. Having Robbie Doyle aboard for the 50th annual Dauphin Island Race on Mobile Bay after just having received my e33 SKeDADDLE.
4. Watching my wife nap on the leeward cockpit seat while I experience the joy of sailing from the weather rail. It feels like sailing a one-design-great helm feel, with great pointing ability and great speed. It was our own little private sailing world - just the two of us aboard.
3. Enjoying wine, cheese, crackers & fruit on our cockpit table with three other couples while under sail in a light breeze.
2. Enjoying six children along with five of us adults with the boat drifting in calm water while they all swam and jumped off the boat...using the optional ladder on the port side-and there was room for more than eleven without any crowding… and towing those same kids, two at a time, behind the boat while they rode an inflatable tube while under power.
1. Passing other sailboats!
Rick added, “I could go on and on. She is easy to handle, she sails great, and she accommodates a lot of people. It is also very easy to prepare her to go sailing and to tidy her up after a sail. We often have an enjoyable sail and we're only gone from the dock an hour or two. Everything about this boat is easy - it only takes me about 15 minutes to install the biminis single-handedly - and they are wonderful in the southern sun!”
Let us know if you ever find yourself near Mobile Bay, Alabama so we can put you in touch with Rick!
